● Eight maritime officers including Senior Police Officer Son Hae-dal in the Jeju aviation division were named the Hero Maritime Officers of 2023.

● S-OIL’s support has continued since an agreement was signed with KCG in 2013. 

On Jan. 17, S-OIL (RD & CEO Anwar A. Al-Hejazi) held an award ceremony for maritime officers of the Korea Coast Guard (KCG) at Hotel Naru Seoul in Mapo together with the Korea National Council on Social Welfare (KNCSW; Chairman Kim Sung-i), presenting award plaques with a combined 90 mil. Won in cash prizes to 8 named Maritime Heroes for 2023.  

In the ceremony, Senior Police Officer Son Hae-dal (28, Jeju Aviation Division) who was named ‘Top Hero Maritime Officer’ received a plaque with a 20 mil. Won cash prize from S-OIL. In addition, the refiner granted an award plaque and a 10 mil. Won cash prize each to seven ‘Hero maritime officers’ including Sergeant Choi Hu-geun (38, KCGS-Pohang, Security & Rescue Division). 

Senior Police Officer Son, who received the top award, rescued seven people using the hoist of an airplane when a fishing vessel was capsized on Jeju Island, and rescued one crew member who was left trapped in the vessel.

“Maritime officers, who take risks to save lives despite difficult sea conditions, are the real heroes,” said S-OIL CEO Anwar Al-Hejazi. “S-OIL will keep providing unstinting support to maritime police officers,” he added.    

In an effort to encourage maritime police officers who are committed to safeguarding the country’s maritime territory and people’s lives and property in the frontline by rescuing ships, tackling marine pollution, and taking action against illegal fishing vessels, S-OIL signed a “Maritime Hero Protection” agreement with the KCG and the KNCSW in 2013. Since then, the Company has been providing support through scholarships for the children of maritime police officers who died in the line of duty, medical bills for injured officers, a retreat camp for officers and their spouses, and hero maritime officer awards.
